The Grumman Wildcat
The Wildcat was an American carrier-based fighter that began service with both the US and British Navies in 1940. Designed and built by Grumman as the F4F, manufacturing was assumed by GM in 1943, with the new designation FM. The Wildcat was the front line Navy/Marine fighter from our entry into WWII until mid 1943. It is the only Navy fighter to serve as a front line fighter for the entire Pacific war. The aircraft distinguished itself in action in the Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, the Solomon Islands and produced countless aces and Medal of Honor winners, such as Joe Foss, Butch O'Hare and "Injun Joe" Bauer. The Wildcat's kill/loss ratio was 6.9:1 for the entire war. Mustang's FM-2 was delivered to the US Navy in July 1945.
